A right royal afternoon tea, at The Orangery, Kensington Palace [REVIEW]

Kensington Palace (above) sits on the edge of London’s magnificent Hyde Park. It is the official London residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, their children, and a handful of other royals. Parts of it are also open to the public, since it is of great historical importance. Not least, Queen Victoria was born and grew up here. Within its manicured gardens sits an elegant dining room, The Orangery, which presents the perfect setting for an afternoon tea.

On the path leading to The Orangery

We booked a table for two for a Royal Afternoon Tea at The Orangery. The lofty building, with it’s soaring ceilings gives a light and airy feel, and is filled with elegant dining table sets, plaster stautes and palm plants: the perfect setting for eating scones and drinking champagne. It was actually used, in days gone by, for Queen Anne’s court entertainment. Nowadays, the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea to diners looking for a meal with a sense of regality.

A whole new meaning to ‘taking tea with the Queen’…

or a 125ml glass of Merlot Rosé Spumante NV £33.50 per person

The scones, orange-scented and currant, were light and warm; and especially delicious washed down with a chilled glass of champagne. The coronation chicken sandwich wraps were tasty, and we were able to ask for as many as we wanted. At first, we were nervous that the staff were a little stuffy, but we were soon hosted by a very suave French waiter, who was much more amenable and let us ruminate over our finger sandwiches for a good four hours. It is easy to lose track of time when you are in good company, and have a steady supply of good food in front of you…

The tea listing was lengthy, but our waiter was happy to help advise. It was a great balance of savoury and sweet, in a time where you can often be faced by tiers and tiers of sickeningly sweet treats.

The Orangery can provide a perfect afternoon out to treat someone you love to a tea with a right royal feel.
