The all-new Hummingbird Bakery afternoon tea, at Sunborn Yacht Hotel [REVIEW]

Finding the best afternoon tea in London is a work in progress. There are certain stipulations and rules by which to judge by: top of the list being the deliciousness of the scone – the crowning glory of any afternoon tea, of course.

The latest addition to the scene is the Hummingbird Under the Sea afternoon tea, served aboard the Sunborn Yacht Hotel, moored at Royal Victoria Dock, the DLR stop is Custom House for the Excel Centre. The tea (pictured above) has been served on board for the three years the yacht has been moored, but the collaboration with the bakery is sure to attract new diners. It is a mixture of sweet and savoury bites, with extra special Hummingbird treats.

This is a perfectly idyllic setting for a tea, served with Laurent Perrier champagne on ice, with incredible views directly over the docks to the O2, the Emirates Air Line cable car, Canary Wharf skyline and even to the city beyond.

The swish 108-foot yacht has a restaurant on the middle deck and a bar on the top, which is where the tea is served. It is a large area, with lots of sofas and a few tables and chairs. Ask for a window table, for the view above. There are no gardens, but you can head out onto the deck area to take photos.

The scones made the grade – warm and soft, the perfect density and full of juicy raisins and plump cranberries. Top with the Devonshire clotted cream and either apricot or strawberry jam. My fellow diner was a coeliac (is allergic to wheat), so the chef prepared a wonderful selection of sandwiches with the same fillings as mine (egg, ham, salmon), a couple of rather large scones, and a mini coffee cake loaf (below)

The new addition to the afternoon tea at Sunborn, the collaboration with the much-loved Hummingbird Bakery, is an ingenious idea and the first of its kind for the cupcake creations. I often find that although delicious, the signature frosting-heavy topped cupcakes can be a little too much in one serving. So, I was pleased to see mini cupcakes topped with ‘under the sea’ themed decorations. The star of the show for me, however, was the gooey chocolate brownie…
