The Crab Shack on Bryher, part of the Hell Bay Hotel, is very pared back for being the most south-westerly restaurant in the country; but quality doesn’t require bells and whistles.
Based in a ronvated (i.e. whitewshaed walls) stone outhouse, the seating is communal with wooden tables and benches. You are given an apron as you enter and seated among your fellow diners.
The chalkboard menu is simple: Portuguese cataplanas filled with mussels, flavoured with chilli or garlic butter to taste, scallops, and Bryher crab.
Additionally, you can order bread, fries, salad and Eton Mess and a cheese board for afters. Do yourself a favour: go hungry and order a small bowl of each, plus the Eton Mess. Worth getting dirty fingers for.
The Crab Shack reopens from May 2018 for the spring/summer season.
